Ecology Block, also known as an Eco Block, is a large, heavy concrete block used for building retaining walls, barriers, storage bins, or temporary structures in construction, agriculture, and industrial settings. They are popular due to their low cost, durability, and ease of installation.
Ecology blocks are made from recycled or leftover concrete, typically weighing between 1,500 to 4,000 pounds. Common dimensions include 2 feet by 2 feet by 6 feet or 2 feet by 2 feet by 3 feet. Most blocks feature interlocking designs with raised and recessed sections to improve stability when stacked.
The manufacturing process begins with collecting unused concrete from construction sites or batch plants. This concrete is poured into large steel molds, which often include interlocking shapes. Once filled, the molds are left to cure.
Ecology blocks are transported using flatbed trucks. Due to their weight, they are loaded and unloaded with forklifts, cranes, or similar equipment. They must be securely strapped or chained during transport to ensure safety.
At the site, the ground is first leveled and compacted. Sometimes a gravel or concrete base is laid. The first row of blocks is placed carefully, usually aligned with a string line or laser level. Blocks are set into place using machinery and may be adjusted slightly with pry bars. Additional rows can be stacked on top, using the interlocking shapes for alignment and stability. In some cases, pins or backfill material may be used for added strength.
Ecology blocks are commonly used for retaining walls, material storage bins, security or traffic barriers, temporary building foundations, and landscaping applications.
