STAGING

The Quest for Level Ground

Staging isn't just about creating a Parking area or a place for hold materials. Often overlooked, is the the need for a Level, Load Bearing surface: Equipment such as Boom Pumps, Truck Cranes or anything with outriggers depend on this. However other equipment such as Skid Steers and Loaders perform better on level surfaces. As for Dump Trucks or anything that Tilts, when operating on a slope - extreme pressures are unevenly placed on bushings, joints and even hydraulics. Not to mention - a Level surface reduces the forces for Roll Back situations and reduces the strain on Brake Systems.

Base Materials

This always depends on what materials can be sourced nearby.  Riprap is often used first because of its load bearing and drainage characteristics. Repurposed Crushed Concrete is also a good base material.

Avoid Bottlenecks

If a Circular Flow is not possible for Ready Mix or other Trucking? - Create Passing Areas which are Load Bearing also. For any ground that isn't or may become Non - Load Bearing. Clearly designate this. Its also good practice to insist that Truck Drivers and Equipment operators walk the property first as this will better inform them about surface conditions.

Clean Out Area

Ready Mix trucks need to have an area close at hand to wash out their equipment. Better to have a depression or lower ground so that waste drains away from the Equipment and Road.

Access for emergency vehicles

When planning a staging area, make sure to leave enough
room for emergency vehicles to get through. If an injury happens,
you want emergency services to get to the injured person as quickly
as possible.

According to the Regulations for Construction Projects, the constructor
is legally required to have emergency procedures in place and to provide
access for emergency vehicles
on a jobsite.
